New Parliament Building: The foundation stone of the new parliament building was laid today in the country. It is estimated to cost Rs 971 crore for the construction of a four-storey new parliament building being built on an area of ​​64,500 square meters, near the old Parliament House. Its construction work will be completed by 2022 till the 75th anniversary of India’s independence. However, the matter of its construction is pending in the Supreme Court. The court has now only allowed to lay the foundation stone. The Central Government has given assurance to the Supreme Court that till the Supreme Court gives its decision on the petitions related to it, the Government will not do any work of building or sabotage.

The new parliament building will be bigger and hightech than the old one. But now the question arises that what will happen to the old Parliament after the new building is built? The government has also thought about this.

Building will not be demolished

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has said that the present house of Parliament will be preserved as the archaeological property of the country. The old Parliament House has seen the country change, in such a situation it will inspire in the future. It is reported that the old Parliament will be used for parliamentary events and will be kept as a museum.

Some facts about the current Parliament House

• There are 12 gates in the old Parliament House.
• It was constructed under the supervision of renowned architects Sir Edwin Lutyens and Sir Herbert Baker.
• The foundation stone of the existing Parliament House was laid by The Duke of Connaught on 12 February 1921. The building was inaugurated on 18 January 1927 by Lord Irwin, the then Viceroy of India.
• The construction of the present Parliament House was completed in six years and the construction costing 83 lakh rupees.
• The present Parliament House is a large circular building, whose diameter is 560 feet. Its circumference is one-third mile and its area is about six acres.
• On the edge of the open verandah of its first floor, 144 columns of cream-colored sandstone are situated, whose height is 27 feet. These pillars give a unique charm and dignity to this building.
• The entire parliament building is surrounded by a decorative wall of red sandstone with iron gates.
• The first meeting of the Central Legislative Assembly was held on 19 January 1927 in the Parliament House.
